During diastolic blood pressure, the ventricles of the heart are relaxed. This is the phase of the cardiac cycle where the heart muscle allows blood to fill the chambers of the heart, specifically the ventricles, from the atria. It is during this relaxation period that the heart is preparing for the next contraction, allowing for a proper volume of blood to be present for efficient pumping.

The diastolic blood pressure reading, which is the lower of the two measurements in a blood pressure reading, reflects this state of relaxation and represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest between beats. Maintaining healthy diastolic pressure is crucial, as it indicates the heart's ability to fill adequately with blood and the overall health of the cardiovascular system.
